What Is a Filter Feeder

Filter feeders are animals that get their food by moving water through a structure that acts as a sieve. Stationary Filter Feeders Some filter feeders are sessile organisms - they dont move much, if at all. Examples of sessile filter feeders are tunicates (sea squirts), bivalves (e.g. mussels, oysters, scallops), and sponges.  Bivalves filter-feed by straining organic matter from the water using their gills. This is accomplished using cilia, which are thin filaments that beat to produce a current over water over the gills. Additional cilia remove the food. Free-Swimming Filter Feeders Some filter feeders are free-swimming organisms who filter the water while swimming or even actively pursue their prey. Examples of these filter feeders are basking sharks, whale sharks, and baleen whales. Basking sharks and whale sharks feed by swimming through the water with their mouths open. The water passes through their gills, and food is trapped by bristle-like gill rakers. Baleen whales feed either by skimming the water and trapping prey on the fringe-like hairs of their baleen or gulping in large quantities of water and prey and then forcing the water out, leaving prey trapped inside. A Prehistoric Filter Feeder One interesting-looking prehistoric filter feeder was Tamisiocaris borealis, a lobster-like animal that had bristled limbs that it may have used to trap its prey. This may have been the first free-swimming animal to filter feed. Filter Feeders and Water Quality Filter feeders can be important to the health of a water body. Filter feeders like mussels and oysters filter small particles and even toxins out of the water and improve water clarity. For example, oysters are important in filtering the water of the Chesapeake Bay. Oysters in the bay have declined due to overfishing and habitat destruction, so now it takes about one year for oysters to filter the water when it used to take about a week. Its popularity, or rather infamousness, and lack of general consensus have caused it to be a subject that everyone knows, but few know well. The Prodigal Son

Answer: The Prodigal Son Abstract The short story being scribbled down with a pencil by Robert Walser talks about a weird man which he encounters on a day. He describes the day and base it over the prodigal man whom he saw once. It is evident from the fact that the opening consists of reference to this man. Once again I encountered the incomparably uncanny man, whom I consider a likeable, useful person. The narrator closely discusses about his opinion about the man whom he remarks as a person haunting nocturnal streets (Walser, 2010). I have a by no means unfavorable impression of this uncanny individual who haunts the nocturnal streets, I announce to you respectfully that I have now and then had occasion to see him standing before a shop window. The story talks about his behavior being a blend of good and bad and the author who is observing him closely across the street. His age was at an ironic stage being as old as a hill yet blossoming in the freshness of youth. He describes the man with such an inherent detail t hat poses up several questions about his appearance, his behavior, his attitude and his beliefs. Some of the evidences form the text are, This man of the world or pious manwhich neednt be such an incommensurabilitydoesnt believe in fatednesses, but now something entirely different has just occurred to me, namely the circumstance that imperious, dogmatic persons can just as suddenly turn into indulgent, docilely obliging ones. he maintains apparently excellent relations with distinguished house- holds and looks as though he were as old as the hills and in the bloom of youthas though he were constantly remaining the self- same immediate middle, the good fellow who isnt good, the bad one who isnt bad. The story then directs to the description of the prodigal son as described in the biblical context explaining about its nature and comparing with the ideal example. However, he also compares him with another figure named Saul who has no patience for emotionality (Walser, 2010) and is desc ribed in Old Testament. The writer goes on with describing the characteristics of Saul in some ironical contexts. He had highly engrossed love for music which also pierces his heart. He compares that uncanny man with the story of a prodigal son described in texts and hence claims that they are a bit unlucky yet try to be happy in such circumstances knowing about their fate and their future. This story basically questions about the feeling of being happy that contains both a strong and a shaky feeling (Bernofsky). Happiness in its own term is a feeling that has different meanings to different people. The uncanny man in its own is a story of intensive description of nature, attributes, behaviors and features of a prodigal son. This micro script from the book Microscript is a short description of a man who was observed by the author and was compared to the different personalities explained in biblical text of Old Testament. This short description beholds a lot of descriptive elements to paint an actual picture of all the personalities. This provides a short summary of the microscript.

Acupuncture mainly deal with some important points in human body, those are liable for the functions of several different organ of human body. As a healthcare practitioner I have to face several cases, where the patients are suffering from acute back pain and the usual treatments have not any significant effect on them. It relieves them for the time beings but not cure them permanently. Therefore, the necessity of an alternative treatment is emerging and so that the reference of acupuncture therapy is coming as it is heavily discussed in healthcare field among the public related to healthcare such as the physicians, healthcare practitioners and patients (Krali k, Trowbridge, Smith, 2008). Moreover, it is widely discussed that it has no side effect on the human body and it has only positive effect on human body. Conclusion As, I have faced several patients who are suffering from acute back pain and I observed that the usual Allopathic treatments have not significant effect on the these patients as it provide short term relieves to the patients of acute back pain and the problem of the patients remain with them and the usual treatment cannot cure the back pain in permanent basis thus, I have to search for alternative treatment and so I choose acupuncture therapy. Part A, Section 2: Formulate a PICO In order to investigate the effect of the treatment on the patients, PICO is an effective instrument that helps in assessing the condition of the patients as well as the effect of the treatment on the patients. It is one of the most effective as well as popular tools among the people of nursing profession as it provide effective outcome that help in effectively evaluate the condition of the patients and the effect of the treatment on the patients (Polit Beck, 2012). For this undertaken matter a PICO is included and by the PICO the result and understanding will be generated that, whether acupuncture is effective in acute back pain or not. For this reason I have collected the response of the patients of acute back pain to the acupuncture therapy and their responses has been put into the popular and effective tool PICO. The results of PICO has been determined and evaluated about whether acupuncture is an effective intervention for chronic low back pain. In the research study, 58 participants have been selected for examining the effectiveness of acupuncture. Population The age of the participants is above 18 that will help to assess the diagnosis pattern including treatment and concordance within a clinical trial of acupuncture for the low back pain. Intervention In a controlled pragmatic randomized clinical trail, 58 patients with low back pain in between 4 weeks and 11 months duration were offered acupuncture randomly. Treatment and standardized diagnosis were completed by the practitioners. The diagnosis was based on low back pain syndromes. One of the practitionerss then re-examined the patients effectively. The inter rater reliability diagnostic was assessed in terms of congruent classifications. Comparison All groups were involved for comparison. The focus was on physical therapy rather than the structured exercise. Outcome The diagnosed syndrome that was most commonly associated with the low back pain was blood stagnation and Qi followed by Bi syndrome and kidney deficiency being more than one syndrome being determined for 66% of the patients. The practitioner has examined the patients concordance was reasonable which was between 80% and 47 of the classifications while values of Kappa lay between 0 and 0.67. The practitioner has provided 158 treatments in total using 188 different acupuncture methods. The most commonly channels used were gall bladder and bladder and the commonest point was BL-23 ad two points of Huatuojijaji. The practitioners have also used Auxiliary treatments to varying degrees. Therefore, Acupuncture is considered as the most effective treatment for low back pains. The diagnostic concordance among the practitioners was clear and reasonable themes emerged for the treatment. According to the result of PICO it is observed that the acupuncture therapy is effective in the treatment if the acute back pain as it significantly improves the condition of the patients and so that it provides much more relieves to the patients and its effects are for long term and permanent as it completely cure the diseases from the patients. Besides this, it is also observed that it has not any significant side effect on the patients. Therefore, the acupuncture is effective in acute back pain and it could be given to the patients of acute back pain. Part A, Section 3: Advance search in CINAHL The advanced search on the CINAHL is based on the search of the broader database which helps in the creation of focus on the PICO measurements that are taken for the consideration of the study of CINAHL in the context of full text. Consideraba al sistema nervioso central como una red, un aparato que siempre funciona como un todo y cuya actividad se entiende cuando se utilizan los principios de "respuesta de figura y fondo" de la psicologia de la Gestalt. A su vez, considera al mismo organismo como una totalidad o Gestalt. Goldstein demostro que las leyes de la forma, introducidas por los psicologos de la Gestalt, no eran validas solo para estudiar la percepcion en laboratorio ni se restringian a los fenomenos fisiologicos, sino que eran utiles para entender a) organismo como un todo. Es asi que extrajo esas nociones para aplicarlas a la psicoterapia para la cual desarrollo un concepto holistico de la autorreaiizacion organismica. El organismo se mueve como un todo, en un estado de tension entre "ser en orden" y "ser en desorden" Se vive en un estado de "catastrofe", en donde se produce una lucha productiva con el mundo. Esta vivencia permite a una persona ir hacia la autorrealizacion: del desorden al orden y a un nuevo desorden. Contrapone asi un concepto freudiano de pasividad ante el mundo interior y el entorno, en donde el organismo busca la reduccion de la tension por el displacer que esta le provoca. Goldstein sostiene que lo organico se motiva en la tension, y que esta produce placer (Quitmann, 1989). "Llamamos normal o sano a aquel en el que la tendencia a la realizacion sale desde dentro y al que supera las perturbaciones, que se derivan del choque con el mundo, no por el miedo sino por la alegria de superacion" (Goldstein, 1939, en Quitmann, 1989, p.79) La tendencia a la buena forma, segun Goldstein, es una aspiracion de funcionamiento que posee todo ser vivo. El objetivo de esta tendencia es alcanzar un estado y/o punto de equilibrio inestable, generando una variable de perpetua oscilacion, en espera de detonantes para su expansion. Todo organismo vivo tiene la motivacion de busqueda de estimulos y condiciones que le permitan mantener su estructura en continuo desarrollo. Perls toma de Goldstein los conceptos de autorregulacion organismica, y el de auto actualizacion: Ser lo que se es y no pretender ser otra cosa. Segun Quitmann (1989), la importancia de Goldstein para la TG se puede sintetizar en: 1. Eleccion y decision como caracteristica existencial del ser humano: Mas que la posibilidad de elegir y decidir, Goldstein plantea la necesidad de llevar a cabo estas acciones. 2. The Irish state as we know it today really began to take form in 1922, at a point in history where the left-wing or socialist theory was gaining popularity rapidly all over the world. Promises of liberty, equality, fraternity, reform and internationalism were causing populations to veer towards the left and, in extreme situations such as Russia, causing people to revolt against their rulers in order to gain a more equal society. Before the formation of the Daà ­l, the Irish people had undergone a revolution of their own, breaking free from hundreds of years of oppression and subjugation by a foreign, tyrannical power. It would seem logical therefore to presume that the Irish people would be more inclined to vote for a political party that would truly take advantage of this new-found freedom by creating a society based on equality, in other words, a left-wing party. However, this proved not to be the case, and as Irelands political party system matured, it was two conservative parti es that would become the flagships foe Irish politics, Fianna Faà ­l and Fine Gael. Other parties have featured over the last eighty years but few of them could have been considered left-wing and those that were lacked either popularity or stability. So what is the reason for this? However, I experienced some psychological stressors related to the environment such as increased noise in the neighborhoods and hi gh temperatures once I started attending school (Nagar 108). In this case, I prefer living in cool environments that are free from natural catastrophes like tornadoes or earthquakes that I consider stressing. The stadiums, parks and sporting facilities influenced by interest in watching and cheering sports (Bechtel 78). The emotional environment has assisted me gain self-esteem through engaging in constructive conversations with family members and peers. I was able to display prosocial behaviors in schools and artistic expressions at both home and school. The emotional environment shaped my life-long struggle for stewardship activities and community involvement that aims at making a difference in different social and economic aspects of human life. Once upon a time there was a young maiden named Cinderella who lived with her wicked stepmother and two ugly stepsisters. There was a ball where the Prince danced with a beautiful maiden. However, at the stroke of midnight, the young woman fled the ball, dropping one of her glass slippers along the way. The next day, the King proclaimed that the Grand Duke visit every house in the kingdom to find the girl who fit into the glass slipper, so that she can be married to the Prince. When the Grand Duke arrives at Cinderella’s house, her stepsisters try on the slipper, but it does not fit them. Then, Cinderella appears, tries on the slipper, and it fits. Soon after, Cinderella is happily married to the Prince (Cinderella). This is Disney’s 1950’s account of the classic fairy tale Cinderella, which greatly differs from the Brothers Grimm retelling. The Brothers Grimm story is filled with violence and misfortune, not with fairy godmothers and singing mice, as in Disneyâ €™s version. In the Brother’s Grimm account of Cinderella, when the first stepsister’s toe is too big for the slipper she cuts it off. Similarly, when the second stepsister tries on the slipper she cuts off her heel to make her foot fit. However, the Prince realizes each of the stepsisters has deceived him and does not take them to be his wife. Then, Cinderella tries on the slipper, it fits, and the Prince takes her as his bride. At the wedding, pigeons peck out one eye of each of the stepsisters for their wickedness and falsehood (â€Å"Cinderella†). Emotional Rollercoaster

In the story, The Jacket by Gary Soto is about a boy who wants a jacket but previous jacket have failed. He tells his mom what kid of jacket he wants and it’s a nice description of leather. Although he thinks that she understood, because he talked to her the whole time while she prep for dinner. He comes home to see what jacket he got and discovers an old guacamole jacket, which makes him throw his books on his bed. Since it’s not the jacket he wanted, he thought of crying because it is so ugly and big.Once again a discovery of disappointment because he try’s on the jacket and makes him look ugly, so he threw it on his brothers bed and stared it down for a long time. After that he decides to play with the dog, swing his arm whistling like a bird, and the dog bites him. Damn dog I thought to see if I was bleeding, and pushed him away when he tried to bite me again. Then he wore the jacket to the sixth grade, and got a D on his math quiz, which shows he didnâ€℠¢t study for upcoming test.He starts to no longer do his homework, started getting C’s on quizzes, forgetting state capitals, and the rivers of South America. This shows that the is very conscious and very nervous because of the jacket. After that, all during that time no love came to me†¦ I stayed with the ugly boys who leaned against the chain link fence, it shows that he letting the jacket win and is not very out going. Next, I blame the jacket†¦ I blame my mom for her bad taste, and her cheap ways. He is always the first to blame other people and seems he doesn’t want to take responsibility.Then, ready to cry, I climb the tree by the alley, the tree must be a safe place and/or a comfort place to get away from things. Whether one is an elite or recreational athlete, there is a high amount of pressure inflicted upon that individual by coaches and oneself in order to be the best one can be. Although many athletes can successfully climb the mountain of emotional and psychological obstacles that lie in their paths, there are some who find themselves overwhelmed and full of anxiety. Athletes tend to be more susceptible to depression due to the many challenges they must endeavor throughout the course of their athletic career. There are several sports specific factors that contribute to depression, factors which include injury, burnout and overtraining. As well, the expectations of coaches and teammates, heightened public visibility, time demands and racial and gender stereotyping add to depressive pressures. Unfortunately, depression among athletes goes underreported due to the fear of being perceived as â€Å"weak†. Athletes are taught to be tough and strong, therefore depression is not something that many want to face or accept and because of that, sports psychologist are rarely used for such issues as depression. Sport participatio n incurs a certain amount of stress and anxiety on athletes, therefore putting individuals at a high risk for developing a mental illness such as depression. Depression is a common mental disorder which affects up to 25% of female athletes and 12% of male athletes (Wesley, 2002, pg 56). Athletes will experience a loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, low energy, poor concentration and irritability (suicideandmentalhealthassociationinternational.org). Unfortunately, athletes who experience symptoms of depression are reluctant to seek help, due to the perception that depression carries a cloak of shame. Athletes are taught to be tough and by admitting to a psychological or emotional problem, an individual’s confidence is threatened. Athletes are trained by their coaches to ‘play through the pain’ and struggle through adverse problems on their own without letting anyone see them cry. â€Å"A 2001 study †¦ found that 96 percent of coaches and 97 percent of athletes said mental health is extremely important to overall performance. That’s good news. However, 85 percent of coaches said their athletes come to talk to them about mental health, though only 68 percent of the athletes said they could go to their coach about such issues† (psychologyofsports.com). Seeking help in the sport’s world is a sign of weakness, when really it should be recognized as a sign of strength. Athletes display a variety of psychological responses to injury including negative reactions such as depression. The inevitable losses such as early retirement in one’s athletic career, or the psychological pain one goes through when experiencing an injury have been known to lead to depression. Depression is fairly common among injured athletes. The more successful the athlete, the more serious the injury, the more likely the athlete will experience an episode of severe depression. Athletes whose self-identity is highly wrapped up in sports are more likely to experience greater depression then recreational athletes. One may feel isolated, experience a huge loss of identity and feel that they have limited options if their ability to continue with their chosen sport is jeopardized. When an injury occurs, whether it is severe or not, an athlete is unable to train to his or her potential. In some cases, an athlete may never fully recover from his/her injury, eventually ending the ir career. The inability to return to pre-injury performance levels and the thought of being replaced by a teammate can only lead one further into depression. â€Å"Factors such as the magnitude of the injury, the success of the rehabilitation program, the athlete’s personality, and level of competition have an impact on the athlete’s responses, rendering the responses somewhat idiosyncratic† (Wann, 1997, pg 219). A number of intervention strategies are discussed throughout our textbook, in reference to athletic injury management. Many sport psychologists have devoted their attention to the benefits of providing psychological intervention strategies to injured athletes (Wann, 1997, pg 217). Psychological interventions for injured athletes can prevent future mental illnesses, such as depression. Injury interventions involve two distinct steps. First and foremost, the psychologist must assess the psychological ramifications of the injury. Second, based on the assessment, psychologists must begin to implement a program which best fits the athlete and their needs (Wann, 1997, pg 222). Because research has indicated that there is a strong correlation between injury and mental illnesses such as depression, it is imperative that athletes seek psychological interventions to assist them with their recovery. Other leading factors which contribute to depression among athletes are overtraining, choking and high levels of anxiety. Highly motivated athletes, consumed with the will to perform well and win, become frustrated by poor performance and loosing. As a result, they increase their practice time and training intensity, causing increased fatigue, ultimately worsening performance, which in turn may eventually lead to depression. â€Å"Overtraining can lead to athletic burnout referred to as overtraining syndrome. The physical demands of the athletic activity could conceivably deplete necessary biological factors such as neurotransmitters. One response to less than satisfactory performance is to push themselves even harder in their training, leading to a state of chronic fatigue and depression† (Nichols, 1993, pg 96). Depression is one of the biggest psychological problems among over trained athletes. If overtraining persists, it is imperative for athletes to seek psychological help so that depression doesn’t occur. Another leading factor which contributes to depression among athletes is high levels of anxiety. Anxiety has been strongly correlated with depression in a number of studies (athleticinsight.com). The continuous stress and pressure on athletes to perform well by fans, coaches and oneself causes one to experience high levels of anxiety, which in turn negatively affects ones performance. â€Å"Literature shows athletes with lower state anxiety and less depressed mood are more likely to perform better than their more anxious and depressed counterparts† (athleticinsight.com). Although, there are a number of external forces which cause athletes to experience depression, it is ultimately up to oneself to face the issues at hand, admit there’s a problem and then ask for help. Fortunately, depression is very treatable, however unfortunately there are simply too many forces opposing some athletes to seek treatment. Athletes are afraid to disclose any psychiatric symptoms for fear that it will be revealed and exploited as a sign of weakness and therefore do not seek professional help. Athletes who experience depression try to cure themselves, mistakenly believing that depression is only a state of mind that a person can snap out of, rather then understanding depression as a disease. ‘â€Å"As athletes, we are taught to be tough,† said former NHL all-star Pat LaFontaine, who has battled depression. â€Å"You get up and shake if off. But you can’t do that with depression. For me, the harder I tried, the worse it got† (psychologyofsports.com). Sport psychologists are extremely underused when an athlete is seeking professional help. Although not all sport psychologists are qualified in dealing with psychological issues such as depression, clinical sport’s psychologists are professionals who are trained to treat such issues. Because every athlete is different, clinical sport psychologists must treat every case of depression individually. When an athlete experiences an injury and as a result falls into the deep shadows of depression, the Affective Cycle Theory argues that an athlete’s reaction is comprised of three different responses: distress, denial and determined coping (Wann, 1997, pg 218). It is important for a clinical sport’s psychologist to assess the individual and the situations that led up to the cause of depression. Without psychological intervention, athletes are very unlikely to obtain a quick recovery process, and may end up falling deeper and deeper into depression. It is almost impossible for athletes to continue on training, when struggling with depression. When an athlete makes his/her well-being and personal happiness conditional upon goal attainment, they put themselves at risk for depression due to possible failure. Injuries to athletes are very career-threatening and therefore as well can lead an athlete down the long road of depression. Fortunately, there are ways to limit some of the anxiety that an athlete may experience throughout his/her athletic career, however the challenge for one is to gain personal strength and seek psychological intervention. Early detection and intervention can allow athletes to recover from their illness or injury so the athlete can resume their ‘normal’ life and continue training if they wish to do so. Thelma & Louise and Do The Right Thing - Movie Review Example Women never had to worry about the absence of home and Thelma & Louise makes this concrete in the concept that their journey is not about finding a home at the end, but escaping the suffocation of patriarchal domination. This domination that begins at home commences from the opening frames of the film. Thelma is quite literally under the thumb of a domineering husband. Louise's situation is revealed to be that of submission to the prevailing order that places men in control and women as servants; she works as a waitress. The film quickly locates home not as a place to which most women would long to return, like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, but as burden to escape. There is nothing specifically peculiar to the early 1990s in this regard; the film could be made today or could it have been made in the 1930s as a Warner Brothers gangster film. As the sign in the original Scarface promises Tony Camonte: The World is Yours. Thelma & Louise, then, fits more closely into the gangster movie genre than the buddy picture as they too come to believe and pursue that ultimately empty promise. In the buddy movie, the men have it all from the beginning. Even if they have nothing, it is still a man's world so they still have the upper hand. The gangster genre presents a man's world as well, but the dominant theme in that genre that is missing from many buddy movies is the establishment of authority. Thelma & Louise do not embark upon a journey to locate home; the climax proves there is no home in America that is not a return to the status quo. Their overwhelming desire is to, just for a brief period, assign domination to the matriarchy. The drive over the cliff is a validation of their acknowledgement that such domination can only be fleeting in America and it is also an acknowledgement of their refusal to return home to the burden of submission to that male domination. Thelma & Louise is such a disturbing portrait of the realities of American society because the two characters are drawn with such complexity. It might be easier to accept their tragic fate if there mere ster eotypes of women commonly referred to as doormats; if they were women who'd been victims of domestic abuse. The fact that Thelma and Louise are intelligent, engaging, beautiful women only serves to underline the fact that patriarchal dominance is systemic in America. Do the Right Thing is the most incendiary, honest, and unflinching portrait of race relations in American film history. Most importantly, the film avoids the trap of suggesting that racial tensions exist entirely within a vacuum constructed on the concept of prejudice as some kind of genetic predisposition. It may be all too easy for viewers of Do the Right Thing to overlook the fact that from what can be gathered, this multiracial community in New York City for the most part seems to have gotten along quite well for decades. The violence escalates not as a result of mindless racial hatred; the encroaching racism is ignited by the disparity in economic power between the haves and have-nots. The opening credits set the stage for a showdown with the subversive lyrics to the rap song "Fight the Power." The power will wind up being Sal, the businessman, and the police who are charged with the protecting the interest of business rather than the people's

Philosophies of Education Essay There are different theories that govern the procedure of learning among students today. Likely, because of the modern culture learning, the said theories are now changed towards the possibility of supporting the modern needs and demands of the students today. Such theories include the philosophies of idealism, realism, neo-thomism, experimentalism and existentialism. Each philosophy addresses different aspects of an individual’s learning and also presents different ways of approaching the subject of education. Idealism  The philosophy of idealism stresses the belief that ideas are the sole truth and the only real things that are worth knowing. Everything that is in this world are mere shadows and distorted images of a more genuine, a more real world. There is a world of ideas on which this world is based and it is only that world which is worth knowing. Proponents of this philosophy focus on the mind and intellectual mechanisms of students. The world of ideas, in the educational setting, becomes the world of the mind. This means an emphasis on fields dealing with symbols and ideas such as history, literature, art, and the like. Realism The philosophy of realism espouses the belief not in a world of ideas but rather in a world of things and beings. Truth, for the realist, is found in observable facts. This means that the realist believes in the world as we see it. The strength of the laws of nature are emphasized. The realist student relies on his or her senses. Learning is thus geared towards fields like math, chemistry, physics, biology, and the like. Neo-Thomism Neo-thomism believes that reality is the universal truth of God. Reality is something that is eternal and unchanging to the neo-thomist. Reality, or universal truth, is only revealed through holy text, such as the Scriptures or through revelations of a divine nature. Although it is only through these two mechanisms that reality can be learned, neo-thomists assert that truth is always supported by human reason. Experimentalism Experimentalism believes in a continuously changing world. Reality, for experimentalists, is what an individual experiences at every precise moment. Experimentalists discover reality through testing and group decisions. An experimentalist student would thus be viewed as an individual who is able to experience different things and coming into contact with other individuals who either add, do nothing, or detract from the said experiences. Emphasis is placed on fields such as sociology, political science, psychology, and other such socially driven fields as well as fields that deal with problem-solving. Existentialism Lastly, existentialism is discussed. This philosophy, originating from the likes of Sartre and Kierkegaard, believes in one’s own interpretation of everything that is around him or her. An individual is able to set for himself or herself a standard for reality and truth. Also, because the individual has this freedom, he or she also has the responsibility over his or her decisions and actions. Reality is, for the true existentialist, subjective. There is no one truth because everyone has their own version of truths and realities. Existentiallist students are free to learn what they want. Discussion is not structured in an existentialist school. Educational Implications of other Philosophies of Education It is undeniable that many of the philosophies of education have had varying impacts and implications on education as a whole. Some of the many theories that have done so include existentialism, behaviorism, perennialism, essentialism, and reconstruction. Existentialsim Existentialism believes in a relative world where every individual is free to create his or her own standards of truth and reality. Because of the propagation of this belief, education has expanded. Curricula are no longer based solely on the scientific method, in symbols, or in the words of a few significant individuals in history. Rather, learning has also become about dialogue between the student and the teacher. It is no longer rare to find teachers believing that they too have learned something from their students. This development is rooted in the principles of existentialism. Teachers are able to see that students are not merely empty vessels waiting to be filled with knowledge. Rather, they are also capable of setting their own versions of reality and of creating their own truths. This is why there are now many classrooms encouraging discourse and free expression. Behaviorism The philosophy of behaviorism emphasizes an individual’s nature to be conditioned, at an early age, to act in particular ways. Students are viewed through the mechanisms of stimulus-response. Behaviorism is behind the educational system’s drive of teaching through modeling and of teaching through a strict implementation of schedules. Rules and regulations in education as well as punishments that come from not following them are based on stimulus-response mechanisms. The most popular impact behaviorism has had on education is the use of grades as a form of reward for those who achieve well in school. Perennialism, as an educational philosophy, espouses a strict and inflexible form of education. It is the philosophy of perennialism that espoused the importance of rational thinking and reasoning. The structure of education, today, is based on the rigidity and conservatism of perennialism. Disciplining of the learner’s behavior in order to achieve reason is a common practice in today’s education and is based on perennialist form. Teaching through structured lessons, controlled teacher-led discussions and class drills are also a few examples of the palpable impacts perennialism has had on education. Essentialism Essentialists believe that there are certain specific skills that an individual must gain in order to have a rational life. The impact of essentialism is clear in today’s educational curricula. There are set subjects for students to learn and basic topics that are believed to be essential in rational living. The basics of reading, writing and math, for example, are never left out of learning. The emphasis education has had on such fundamental concepts are all a result of the teachings of the essentialists. Reconstruction Finally, education has also been impacted by the philosophy of reconstruction. This philosophy revolves on the concept of constant change. The world is constantly changing and humans have to constantly change in order to keep up. The greatest impact it has had on education is the way educators have handled other aspects of the field. Intelligence, for example, is now studied through a multi-dimensional eyepiece. There are now alternative learning procedures developed for the purposes of learners that fall outside the norm. There is more freedom to change educational machinations because of the concepts espoused by reconstruction.

Trust, Deceit, & Immorality in And Then There Were None, a mystery novel by Agatha Christie, discusses matters of trust, deceit, and immorality. These two words are present within each chapter, and they come to us in ways that do not meet the eye right away. They require a certain level of thought in order to be understood clearly. In which Agatha Christie hopes to bring out. Trust is a key element of life. We need to choose who we can confide and believe in. If the ten people on the island want to stay alive, they need to be aware of those who are truly loyal, but they need to choose wisely, for one out of the ten is a murderer. Everyone in the house has there suspicions. No matter what the circumstances are, they remain immutable about not trusting each other. Having no trust makes all of them a nervous wreck, making each of them more susceptible of being the next victim of murder. Having no trust only digs us a deeper hole to the inevitable, and when we trust the wrong person, the inevitable happens sooner than expected. Deceit, unfortunately, is also a part of life. Deceit inside And Then There Were None, however, is a part of death. Lombard and Vera face the facts when they appear to be the last ones alive on the island. Instead of being the nice man he seemed to be, he turned out to be a miscreant. Lombard fools a lot of people with his act of being paranoid of having the killer looking over his shoulder. It is his self that he needs to guard, and he is not doing a good job of that, because Vera kills him instead. Death comes about in many ways. Murder is one of them. This immorality is the basis of the whole entire book. One by one, each one of the ten people die by someone else’s immoral actions. Even at the end of the book when Vera shoots Lombard, she had committed a brutal crime. Yes, she was defending herself, but she still chooses to use her hands to take someone else’s life. Immorality plagues society today deeply. We have twisted morals so much that the may think the most wr ong action is OK. And Then There Were None is a book that applies lives ways in forms that come to us unconsciously.

George Orwell George Orwell was born Eric Arthur Blair on June 25, 1903, in Motihari, India. The Blair's were relatively prosperous civil servants, working in India on behalf of the British Empire. Blair would later describe his family?s socioeconomic status as "lower-upper middle class," on comment on the extraordinary degree to which British citizens in India depended on the Empire for their livelihood; though the Blair were able to live quite comfortably in India, they had none of the physical assets or independent investments that would have been enjoyed by their class in England proper. Despite this factor, Ida Blair moved back to England in 1904 with Eric and his older sister Marjorie so that they could be brought up in a more traditional Christian environment. In England, Blair entered the public school system, and was admitted to Eton College in 1917. For most students of this era, Eton led directly to higher education at a university, often Oxford or Cambridge. Blair shunned further formal schooling, and after leaving Eton in 1921, returned to India in 1922 to join the Indian Imperial Police. This work gave Blair his first real experiences with the poor and downtrodden whom he would later champion, and unhappy with the his position as the "hand of the oppressor," Blair resigned from the police force in 1927, returning to England that same year. Upon return to England, Blair lived in the East End district of London, which was filled with paupers and the destitute, whom he saw as the spiritual kin of the Burmese peasants he had encountered as a policeman. In 1928, Blair moved to Paris to become a writer, where he again lived among the poor, and was eventually forced to abandon his writing temporarily and become a dishwasher. He returned to England the next year (1929), and lived as a tramp before finding work as a teacher at a private school. This position gave Blair time to write, and his first book, Down and Out in Paris and London, was published in 1933, under the pseudonym George Orwell. The publication of this first work, which was an account of his years living among the poor of Paris and London, marks the beginning of a more stable period for Orwell, in which he taught, opened a bookshop, and continued to write. His first fictional work, Burmese Days, appeared in 1934. The next few years saw a steady stream of activity for Orwell, who produced A Clergyman?

Mid-Autumn Festival Essays - Autumn, Public Holidays In China Mid-Autumn Festival The Mid-Autumn Festival occurs every year on the fifteenth day of the eighth month. This date is in respect to the lunar calendar which is used by the Chinese. In the Gregorian calendar, used in America, this day would be approximately the fifteenth of September. On this day, the moon is supposed to be at its fullest and brightest of the year. The whole family eats out or in their yards to celebrate and watch the full moon. Children play with paper lanterns and the same lanterns are hung outside the front doors of buildings, such as houses and restaurants. Mooncakes are eaten and Chinese tea is usually used to wash it down. The name, mooncake, is self-explanatory. It is a round cake, in the shape of a moon. The ingredients of the cake consist of lotus seeds, made into a sort of paste. The paste is surrounded by a crust, which usually has four Chinese characters imprinted on the top. These characters either tell the type of mooncake it is (i.e. regular, lotus with egg yolk), the name of the store it was bought from, or just simply says ?mooncake?. The origin of the mooncake is in China, during the Sang Dynasty. The Han people were conquered by the Mongolians and named the new dynasty Yuan. The Han people did not like living under Mongolian rule. Therefore, they wanted to rebel and retake China. However, the Mongolians had taken this into consideration and did not allow the people to communicate (especially public gatherings) or to possess sharp, pointed weaponry. Thus, the people had to find a way of communicating secretly. One group of men thought up the idea of placing a piece of paper with the date of the rebellion inside little cakes, which they would sell to the people, who would read the paper and find out the date. To gain permission from the Mongolian soldiers to sell the cakes, they told them that the cakes were a sort of offering to the gods. They said that they would pray that the Mongolian emperor could have eternal life. The gullible soldiers quickly agreed. Everyone received the cakes and the rebellion date was set for the fifteenth day of the eighth month. Since the Mongolians could not read Chinese, they did not know of the rebellion, were caught by surprise, and defeated. From then on, the fifteenth day of the eighth month was known as the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival to celebrate the day of the rebellion. Many myths are formed about holidays. One which goes with this holiday is about a time when the world had ten suns and the earth was hot and dry. Nothing could survive. A hero stepped forward and used nine arrows to shoot down nine of the suns. He was crowned king and married a beautiful wife. Within years of his reign, he became selfish and greedy, a dictator. He wanted to live forever and make the people suffer. Therefore, he mixed a powerful potion and made a pill which, when eaten, would give the person eternal life. His wife found him out and stole the pill. To keep her husband from eating it, she ate it herself. However, after she ate it, she felt her body get lighter and lighter until she was floating. She kept rising higher and higher until she reached the moon, where she lives until this day. There are many variations of this story, such as the bringing of a rabbit with her because the gods wanted to reward her bravery by giving her company for her loneliness. Some people say that they can sometimes see a woman in the moon with a rabbit and a tree (another variation).

How to Write a Great TOEFL or TOEIC Essay Writing an essay can be a difficult enough task as it is; writing it a language that is your first language is even harder. If youre taking the TOEFL or the TOEIC and have to complete a writing assessment, then read these instructions for organizing a great five-paragraph essay in English. Paragraph One: The Introduction This first paragraph, made up of 3-5 sentences, has two purposes: grabbing the readers attention, and providing the main point (thesis) of the whole essay. To get the readers attention, your first few sentences are key. Use descriptive words, an anecdote, a striking question or an interesting fact related to your topic to draw the reader in. To state your main point, your last sentence in the first paragraph is key. Your first few sentences of the introduction basically introduce the topic and grab the readers attention. The last sentence of the introduction tells the reader what you think about the assigned topic and lists the points that youre going to write about in the essay.Heres an example of a good introductory paragraph given the topic, Do you think teenagers should have jobs while they are still students?: Ive worked ever since I was twelve. As a teenager, I cleaned houses for my family members, made banana splits at an ice cream parlor, and waited tables at various restaurants. I did it all while carrying a pretty good grade point average in school, too! I definitely believe that teenagers should have jobs while they are still students because a job teaches discipline, earns them cash for school, and keeps them out of trouble. Paragraphs Two - Four: Explaining Your Points Once youve stated your thesis, you have to explain yourself! The thesis in the example introduction was I definitely believe that teenagers should have jobs while they are still students because a job teaches discipline, earns them cash for school, and keeps them out of trouble. The job of the next three paragraphs is to explain the points of your thesis using statistics, examples from your life, literature, the news or other places, facts, examples, and anecdotes. Paragraph Two: Explains the first point from your thesis: Teenagers should have jobs while they are still students because a job teaches discipline. Paragraph Three: Explains the second point from your thesis: Teenagers should have jobs while they are still students because a job earns them cash for school. Paragraph Four: Explains the third point from your thesis: Teenagers should have jobs while they are still students because a job keeps them out of trouble. In each of the three paragraphs, your first sentence, called the topic sentence, will be the point youre explaining from your thesis. After the topic sentence, youll write 3-4 more sentences explaining why this fact is true. The last sentence should transition you to the next topic. Heres an example of what paragraph two would look like: First, teenagers should have jobs while they are still students because a job teaches discipline. When I was working at the ice cream store, I had to show up every day on time or I would have gotten fired. That taught me how to keep a schedule, which is a big part of learning discipline. As I cleaned the floors and washed the windows of my family members homes, I knew they would be checking up on me, so I worked hard to do my best, which taught me an important facet of discipline, which is thoroughness. But being disciplined isnt the only reason its a good idea for teenagers to work during school; it can also bring in the money! Paragraph Five: Concluding the Essay Once youve written the introduction, explained your main points in the body of the essay, transitioning nicely between them all, your final step is to conclude the essay. The conclusion, made up of 3-5 sentences, has two purposes: to recap what youve stated in the essay, and leave a lasting impression on the reader. To recap, your first few sentences are key. Restate the three major points of your essay in different words, so you know the reader has understood where you stand. To leave a lasting impression, your last sentences are key. Leave the reader with something to think about before ending the paragraph. You could try a quote, a question, an anecdote, or simply a descriptive sentence. Heres an example of a conclusion: I cant speak for anyone else, but my experience has taught me that having a job while being a student is a very good idea. Not only does it teach people to have character in their lives, it can give them the tools they need to succeed like money for college tuition or a good reputation. Sure, its hard to be a teenager without the added pressure of a job, but with all the benefits of having one, its too important not to make the sacrifice. Like Mike would say, Just do it.
